Aer Lingus is the flag carrier of Ireland and, after low-cost carrier Ryanair, the second-largest airline in the country. Aer Lingus flies to destinations in Europe and North America. The airline was founded to connect Ireland to the rest of the world with convenient and comfortable air transport. Aer Lingus wants to be a leading carrier for flights across the Atlantic Ocean. The home base of Aer Lingus, Dublin Airport, is an ideal transfer airport for flights to the United States because of its U.S. preclearance.

Organization

Aer Lingus is together with British Airways, Iberia and Vueling one of the four large airlines of International Airlines Group (IAG). The airline has about 4,000 employees. Aer Lingus has two frequent flyer programs: AerClub and Avios. AerClub is only used by Aer Lingus while Avios is a joint program of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and others.

History

Aer Lingus was founded on 15 April 1936 and started its operation with a flight between Dublin and Bristol. The airlines’ first trans-Atlantic flight was operated in 1958 from Shannon to New York by an aircraft that was named St Patrick. Ryanair tried three times to take-over Aer Lingus, in 2006, 2008 and 2012. Eventually, International Airlines Group (IAG) took over the airline in 2015. With this take-over, IAG also bought the 30% stake that was earlier obtained by Ryanair.
