Air Austral is the largest airline from the French overseas department Réunion. The airline mainly flies from Réunion to destinations in France and surrounding countries along the Indian Ocean.

History
Air Austral was founded in 1974 by businessman Gérard Ethève as Réunion Air Services. The airline started its operation in 1977 with a flight Sainte-Marie to Mayotte. About 10 years later, at the end of 1986, the airline was transformed to Air Réunion with help from Air France and Air Mauritius. In 1990, the airline changed its name to Air Austral after it received more investments from Air France.
