Air Austral is the largest airline from the French overseas department Réunion. The airline mainly flies from Réunion to destinations in France and surrounding countries along the Indian Ocean.


The largest stakeholder of Air Austral is Sematra, which is a semi-public company. Air Austral is for about 50% the owner of Air Madagascar and Ewa Air. The airline has nowadays about 1,000 employees. Air Austral has a codeshare agreement with the airlines Air India and Air Madagascar.

Air Austral was founded in 1974 by businessman Gérard Ethève as Réunion Air Services. The airline started its operation in 1977 with a flight Sainte-Marie to Mayotte. About 10 years later, at the end of 1986, the airline was transformed to Air Réunion with help from Air France and Air Mauritius. In 1990, the airline changed its name to Air Austral after it received more investments from Air France.

Passengers that fly with Air Austral can bring 1 piece of cabin luggage with a maximum weight of 10 kg and a maximum size of 55x45x20cm. In addition, every passenger is allowed to bring 1 piece of checked luggage of 25 kg in Loisirs (Economy) Class, 35 kg in Comfort Class and 40 kg in Business Class.
