History
Air Europa was founded in 1984 and started operating in 1986. It was then the first private airline in Spain that started operating scheduled domestic and later international flights, which ended Iberia’s monopoly in Spain. The airline made a controversial decision in 1998 when it signed a franchise agreement with Iberia, although this was dissolved later. In the years that followed Globalia stayed the owner of Air Europa. In 2019, IAG (the parent company of Iberia) announced that it wants to take over Air Europa of Globalia by mid-2020.
