Alitalia was initially founded in 1946 under the name Alitalia-Italian International Airlines. In the 90s, the airline became in financial difficulties and commenced a joint venture with KLM in 1999. At the beginning of the 21st century, the airline was several times restructured. In 2008, the airline decided to stop the joint venture with KLM, caused by the merger between KLM and Air France. In the same year, the Italian investment company CAI decided to make a 1,1 billion investment in the airline. In 2013, the airline was still not able to become profitable which opened the doors for the Arabic Airline Etihad to take a large stake in the airline.
