Alitalia is the flag carrier of Italy and wants to be the preferred airline for Italians that fly to destinations in Italy, across Europa and out there. The airlines’ goal is to spread the Italian traditions, way of life and gems of Italy across the world.
Since 2017, the airline is owned by the Italian state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Delta Air Lines.

Alitalia was initially founded in 1946 under the name Alitalia-Italian International Airlines. In the 90s, the airline became in financial difficulties and commenced a joint venture with KLM in 1999. At the beginning of the 21st century, the airline was several times restructured. In 2008, the airline decided to stop the joint venture with KLM, caused by the merger between KLM and Air France. In the same year, the Italian investment company CAI decided to make a 1,1 billion investment in the airline after it went bankrupt. In 2013, the airline was still not able to become profitable which opened the doors for the Arabic Airline Etihad to take a large stake in the airline in 2014. In 2017, the went bankrupt again but new investors made it possible to restart its operation.
- The airline had multiple difficult times in the past. The airline even went bankrupt twice in 2008 and 2017. But restarted its operating due to new investors.
- In 2014, the airline was saved from bankruptcy due to investments of Etihad Airways.

Alitalia passengers can bring 1 piece of cabin luggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg and 1 accessory. For checked luggage, the permitted amount of baggage depends on the travel class. Economy Light passengers need to pay an additional fee to bring 1 piece of cabin luggage while Economy passengers can bring 1 piece of checked luggage with a maximum weight of 23 kg. Premium Economy and Comfort passengers can bring 2 pieces of hold luggage with each a maximum weight of 23 kg. Business Class travellers can bring 2 pieces of each 32 kg on board of their flight.
