Atlantic Airways is the flag carrier of the Faroe Islands, a country in the Kingdom of Denmark. The airline operates from Vágar Airport and operates routes to Denmark, Scotland and some other destinations. The airline wants to connect the Faroe Islands with the rest of the world.
Atlantic Airways was founded in 1987 by a collaboration of the Faroese government and the Danish airline Cimber Air. In 1989, the Faroese government took full ownership of the airline. In 2007, the government decided to sell a part of its shares. From 2010, the airline was able to grow due to the runway extension at Vágar Airport, this made it possible to fly with larger aircraft to the Faroe Islands.
- Atlantic Airways does not only have aircraft but also Helicopters, these are used to transfer people between the islands.
- The airline is planning to start the first intercontinental route (to the USA) in late 2019.
