Avianca is a Colombian airline that operates the largest part of its flights to destinations in the Americas.


Avianca is owned by its parent company Avianca Holdings S.A. The airline has many subsidiaries among which Avianca departments in different Latin American countries. The airline has about 20,000 employees.

Avianca was founded in 1919 under the name SCADTA. In 1940, the airline merged with the Colombian airline SACO. At that time, the airline was renamed to Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A. in short Avianca. In 2004, the official name of the airline was changed to Aerovías del Continente Americano but the airline kept its short name Avianca.
