History
Avianca was founded in 1919 under the name SCADTA. In 1940, the airline merged with the Colombian airline SACO. At that time, the airline was renamed to Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A. in short Avianca. In 2004, the official name of the airline was changed to Aerovías del Continente Americano but the airline kept its short name Avianca.
