Iberia is the flag carrier of Spain and the largest airline in the country. The airline mainly focusses itself on flights between Europe and Latin America, however, Iberia also flies to destinations in Africa, North America and Asia.


Iberia is part of International Airlines Group (IAG) which is also the parent company of British Airways. Iberia has a subsidiary which is called Iberia Express. Another subsidiary of Iberia is Air Nostrum, which operates as a franchise company. The airline is a Oneworld alliance member and has codeshare agreements with over 20 airlines.

Iberia was founded in 1927 by the investments of the Spanish businessman Horacia Echevarrieta and Deutsche Luft Hansa. Nowadays, the airline is one of the oldest airlines in the world that still operates under its initial name. Nevertheless, the airline did not operate under its current name between 1928 and 1937, when the airlines’ operations were merged into Compañía de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas S.A. which was also called CLASSA.

  • Iberia’s feeder airline is called Iberia Express, which only operates domestic and short regional flights.
  • The airline was awarded as Best Airline in Southern Europe, according to Skytrax (2019).
  • Iberia Plus was the first airline loyalty programme in Europe, it’s nowadays part of Avios loyalty programme.


Iberia has two VIP lounges at Madrid Barajas Airport, these are called after two famous painters: Dalí and Velázquez. The lounges have a wine corner to enjoy some top DOC wines.

In tourist/ economy class passengers can take one piece of hand baggage and one personal item with them onboard. Business class passengers on short-haul flights can also take one piece of hand baggage and one personal item while business class passengers on long-haul flights can take two pieces of hand luggage and on personal item onboard.
