Lufthansa German Airlines is the flag carrier of Germany and is one of the largest airlines in Europe. The airline flies to destinations in Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and South America. Lufthansa has become a leading airline in the aviation world over the past decades.

Organization

Lufthansa is the largest airline within the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa Group is also the parent company of Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Brussels Airlines and Air Dolomiti. Lufthansa Group has in total about 130,000 employees, which makes it Europe’s largest airline group.

History

Lufthansa was founded in 1953 in Cologne. However, the airline’s traces are going back to 1926 when the Deutsche Luft Hansa was founded. In 1945, after the defeat of the Nazi’s, the airline must cease its operation. On 1 April 1955, the new founded Lufthansa started its operation with its first domestic routes within West Germany. Until the reunification of Germany in 1990, the airline could expand its routes to East Germany among which Berlin. Three years before the start of the 21st century, the airline was a founding member of the world’s largest alliance, Star Alliance. In the 21st century, Lufthansa Group acquired a handful of smaller airlines, among which: Swiss International Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines.

Economy Class and Economy Premium passengers are allowed to bring 1 piece of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg on board of Lufthansa aircraft. Business Class and First Class passengers are permitted to carry 2 pieces of cabin luggage with each a maximum weight of 8 kg. In addition, every passenger can bring 1 personal item.
