Virgin Atlantic was founded by Randolph Fields and Alan Hellary in 1984 as British Atlantic Airways. Soon after, the two got in touch with British entrepreneur Richard Branson, who bought 25% of the airlines’ shares with the condition that the airline needed to change its name to Virgin Atlantic Airways. In that same year, the airline operated its first flight from London Gatwick Airport to New York Newark Airport. In the years that followed, Virgin Group (owned by Richard Branson) acquired all remaining shares of the airline and the airline grew rapidly by opening many new routes. In 1999, 49& of the airlines’ shares were sold to Singapore Airlines, these shares were later taken over by Delta Air Lines in 2012. In 2019, Air France-KLM acquired 31% of Virgin Group’s shares, which caused that Virgin Group was no longer the largest shareholder.
- The brand Virgin was founded by Richard Branson, who is also the founder of the famous record label Virgin Records.
