Airport Taxi Report Summer 2019
Major price differences in taxi fares at European airports
Airports in London and Milan by far the most expensive, travellers want transparency
LONDON, AUGUST 8, 2019. Taking a taxi from the airport of arrival to the final destination at some airports is an expensive affair. At airports in London (Stansted, Luton, Gatwick) and Milan (Bergamo, Malpensa), travellers even have to take into account 100 euros for a taxi ride to the city centre. This amount is 10 times higher than the price at airports in Bucharest and Warsaw. In Europe, travellers pay an average of 40 euros for a taxi ride from the airport to the city centre, according to a study conducted by AirMundo.com.
The Airport Taxi Report Summer 2019 ‘Taxi fares at European airports’ compares the taxi rates at the 50 busiest airports in Europe. The report offers travellers an insight into the average prices for an airport taxi ride to the city centre. Prices of pre-booked taxis are not included in the comparison.
Expensive taxis in London and Milan
The top 5 most expensive airports to continue a journey by taxi are Milan Bergamo Airport (105 EUR), London Stansted Airport (104 EUR / 95 GBP), London Luton Airport (99 EUR / 90 GBP), Milan Malpensa Airport (95 EUR) and London Gatwick Airport (EUR 93 / GBP 85). The unfavourable location of these airports, at a great distance from the city centre, plays an important role.
Taxi more expensive than airline ticket
Milan Bergamo Airport (Ryanair), London Stansted Airport (Ryanair) and London Luton Airport (easyJet and Wizz Air) are mainly used by low-cost carriers. According to the study, however, they are also the most expensive to take a taxi from. Travellers who are only guided by the prices of airline tickets will be disappointed here. Chances are that a taxi ride to the hotel in the centre costs more than the flight. Booking a taxi in advance is a way to reduce the cost of taking a taxi to and from London airports.
Average taxi fare 40 euros
In Europe, the average price for a taxi ride from the airport to the city centre is 40 euros for a journey of 34 minutes. Compared to half a year ago (Airport Taxi Report Winter 2019), only the taxi fares at the airports of Istanbul have risen. Travellers should bear in mind that, in practice, few taxi drivers at Istanbul New Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen Airport adhere to the official rates.
Taxi ride for 10 euros
The price level at airports in Eastern Europe is clearly different, i.e. prices are lower. At Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (11 EUR / 67 TRY), Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport (10 EUR / 45 RON), Warsaw Airport (9 EUR / 40 PLN) and Antalya Airport (8 EUR / 48,50 TRY) a taxi ride from the airport to the centre of the city costs only 10 euros. Taxi fares are 10 times cheaper than the prices at the most expensive airports.
Transparency through flat rates
The research among the 50 busiest airports in Europe shows that more and more airports in Europe are introducing flat rates for airport taxis. The prices for a taxi ride to the city centre have been determined at 8 of the 50 airports. Milan Malpensa Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris Orly Airport, Rome Fiumicino Airport, Athens Airport, Nice Airport, Madrid Barajas Airport and Saint Petersburg Pulkovo Airport communicate the fixed prices for a taxi from the airport to the city centre through their website and app.
“Expensive or very affordable, every traveller wants to know beforehand what the price of a taxi ride will be,” says Guus Wantia of AirMundo.com. “With fixed prices, airports meet the wishes of travellers. Communicating clear prices is essential, yet many airports don’t make much effort to inform travellers. Bergamo Airport for example, the most expensive airport in the study, should communicate more clearly via the official website and at the airport itself.”

Airport Taxi Report Winter 2019 ‘Taxi fares at European airports’
AirMundo.com biannually compares taxi prices at the 50 busiest airports in Europe (summer and winter reports). Comparisons are made based on both the taxi ride fare and the price per kilometre. For airports close to the centre, the taxi ride fare is a preferable comparison, the prices are lower because fewer kilometres have to be covered. For airports further away from the centre, the price per kilometre is a more favourable comparison, because the price per kilometre decreases as the distance increases.
