Taxis Fares Stabilize at European Airports

Big differences between airports; London and Milan airports most expensive

LONDON, AUGUST 29, 2023. After major increases last year (+10%), prices for taxis at airports in Europe seem to be stabilizing. A study by AirMundo.com shows travellers at European airports pay an average of 46 euros for a taxi ride to the centre of the city. Compared to the summer of 2022, taxi fares increased by an average of +2.7%. Taxi rides to or from the airport are the most economical in Turkey, Spain and Eastern Europe. Airports in London (UK) and Milan (Italy) are among the most expensive in Europe.

The Airport Taxi Report Summer 2023 ‘Taxi Fares at European Airports’ compares the taxi rates at the 50 busiest airports in Europe. The report offers travellers an insight into the average prices for an airport taxi ride to the city centre. Prices of pre-booked taxis are not included in the comparison.

Taxi Ride for 46 Euros

In 2022, inflation and the war in Ukraine caused a significant increase in taxi fares at airports in Europe. In 2023, prices for taxis at airports in Europe seem to be stabilizing. In Europe, the average price is 46 euros for a taxi ride from the airport to the city centre, for an average taxi ride of 32 minutes. Compared to a year ago (Airport Taxi Report Summer 2022), taxis at airports are now +2.7% more expensive.

Big Differences

There are big differences between countries. Taxis are most expensive at airports in the north and west of Europe and cheaper in the south and east of Europe. At the busiest airports in Spain, a taxi ride to the city centre costs an average of 27.50 euros; in Turkey only 13 euros. Although prices in Turkey have risen sharply, the exchange rate of the weak Turkish lira works in favour of Europeans and Americans. At airports in the United Kingdom (78 euros), Germany (47 euros), France (47 euros) and Italy (78 euros), the average taxi fare is much higher. This is especially true for airports further away from the city centre.

Short Distances, High Fares

“Although taxi fares in Europe have only increased by one euro on average compared to last year (46 euros in 2023 vs. 45 euros in 2022), the differences between countries are big and travellers sometimes pay considerable amounts for only short distances,” says Guus Wantia, owner of AirMundo.com. “At Geneva Airport (€ 8.67 per km), Zurich Airport (€ 4.33 per km), Copenhagen Airport (€ 4.00 per km), Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (€ 3.53 per km) and Brussels Airport (€ 3.47 per km), for example, the price per kilometre is very high. These airports are not far from the city centre, but taxis are expensive. Travellers should be aware that these airports have their own railway stations; public transportation offers an excellent alternative here.”

Airport Taxi Report Summer 2023 ‘Taxi fares at European airports’
AirMundo.com compares the taxi rates at the 50 busiest airports in Europe, every year in the summer. Comparisons are made based on both the taxi ride fare and the price per kilometre. For airports close to the city centre, the taxi fare is a preferable comparison, since the prices are lower due to the shorter distance travelled. For airports that are further from the city centre, the price per kilometre is a more favourable comparison, because the price per kilometre decreases as the distance increases.
