Train to Amsterdam
The biggest airport in the Netherlands has its own railway station, which makes it easily accessible by public transport. The train connection with the capital is excellent. During the day, eight trains per hour depart from the airport to the main railway station Amsterdam CS, the journey takes 16 minutes on average. You can take a train of the Dutch Railways NS, the names are Intercity direct and Sprinter (via Lelylaan and Sloterdijk). You can also take a direct train from the airport to Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam.
The train station of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located under Schiphol Plaza, this is the place where you can buy train tickets and access the departure and arrival halls. If you have to wait for your luggage in the baggage reclaim area, you can already buy a train ticket from one of the NS ticket machines located in this area.
A single ticket to or from Amsterdam costs € 4.30 for 2nd class and € 7.20 for 1st class. On the Schiphol Airport – Amsterdam route, you do not have to pay a surcharge for the Intercity direct, this is mandatory on the Schiphol Airport – Rotterdam route. Metro, tram and nearby cities
At Amsterdam CS you can change to the metro and tram to reach your final destination in the city. The main railway station offers a connection to subway lines M50, M51, M52 (Noord/Zuidlijn), M53 and M54. Wonderful historic cities like Haarlem (17 min.), Utrecht (27 min.) and Leiden (37 min.) are located close to Amsterdam, you have several travel options every hour. The price for a 2nd class ticket is € 5.00 to € 10.00.
Bus to Amsterdam
It is also possible to travel by bus between the airport and Amsterdam. Bus 397 of Connexxion (Amsterdam Airport Express) runs every 7.5 to 15 minutes between Nieuw-Vennep (P+R Getsewoud Zuid) and bus station Elandsgracht near the centre of Amsterdam. Travel time from the bus stop in front of the airport (Schiphol, Airport) to the second last stop in the city centre (Amsterdam, Leidseplein) is 33 minutes.
The bus stops in Amsterdam at the Olympic Stadium, Museumplein and Rijksmuseum among other locations. During the night, you can travel every 30 minutes by night bus N97 (Niteliner) between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the city. The Amsterdam Airport Express is particularly popular with tourists.
Tickets can be purchased online through the Connexxion website, at the Info & Ticket bus or from the bus driver. The prices are € 6.00 for a single ticket and € 10.00 for a return. A single ticket is valid for 1.5 hours on the bus, tram and metro. It is cheaper, however, if you use an OV-chipkaart. Then, the price is approximately € 3.30.
