The majority of the flights from the airport depart to domestic destinations and are operated by Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines. In terms of passenger numbers, the airport (27 million passengers in 2019) is larger than Washington Dulles International Airport and Washington Reagan National Airport.

Washington D.C. does not have an international airport, however there are three airports in close proximity of the capital of the United States.
