Although the airport is located on French territory, the Swiss city of Basel is closer in distance than Mulhouse in France and Freiburg in Germany. Basel’s city centre is situated 6 kilometres / 3.7 miles (12 minutes) away from the airport. The city centre of Mulhouse lies at a distance of 30 kilometres / 18.6 miles (25 minutes), the distance to Freiburg in Germany is 75 kilometres / 46.6 miles (50 minutes).
From BSL Airport to Basel City centre by Car
Bus to Basel
BVB buses run between Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport and Basel Bahnhof SBB, one of the two main railway stations in Basel together with Basel Badischer Bahnhof. Tram line 2 and trains (S-Bahn S6 among others) connect the train stations in Basel. The journey by bus line 50 from Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport to Basel Bahnhof SBB takes 17 to 18 minutes.
The bus departs from Monday to Sunday (and public holidays) at least every 10 minutes in the direction of Basel and the airport, in the early morning and late evening bus line 50 runs less frequently. Please consult website and timetable bus line 50 for more information. If you booked a hotel in Basel you can use public transport for free during your stay. On the way to your accommodation you only have to show the hotel’s reservation confirmation to the bus driver, it guarantees a free transfer by bus (see Basel Mobility Ticket).
The price for a single ticket is 4.70 CHF or the equivalent in euros, children from 6 to 16 years pay a reduced rate (3.10 CHF). For this amount of money you will get a ticket for two zones, all parts of Basel can be reached because you are allowed to change. The same applies to the destinations Haltingen, Weil am Rhein, Lörrach and Grenzach-Wyhlen in Germany. Tickets are available from the ticket vending machines and the bus driver too.
Bus and train to Mulhouse
Mulhouse can be reached by public transport using both bus and train. The first step is the bus to Saint-Louis railway station (Gare SNCF). Distribus line 11 runs to and from Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport every 15 to 30 minutes, the price is € 2.50. The bus journey takes only 10 minutes. Once arrived at the train station of Saint-Louis you can take the train to Mulhouse. Travel time by train is 20 minutes on average, tickets are available at the box office and ticket machine. FlixBus to Freiburg
Approximately every hour a bus runs directly from the airport to Freiburg, also known as Freiburg im Breisgau. The journey time from EuroAirport bus stop, which is in front of the terminal, to the bus station in Freiburg (Busbahnhof ZOB am Freiburg Hauptbahnhof) is 55 to 60 minutes. The stop in Freiburg is next to the central train station and very close to the centre of the city. Buses run via the A35 and A36 motorways in France to Freiburg in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Tickets can be booked in advance via the FlixBus website, which is easier and sometimes even a bit cheaper.
