The airport is 29 kilometres / 18 miles from the centre of Chicago (Willis Tower, The Loop). Travel time to Downtown Chicago via the John F. Kennedy Expressway (I-90) is 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Chicago’s city centre and business district is known as The Loop, this part of the city is located between Chicago River, Lake Michigan and Roosevelt Road.

Public transport

Metro / “L” to Chicago

Chicago O’Hare Airport has its own metro station at a short distance from terminals T1, T2 and T3. The station O’Hare is accessible on foot via the ground floor of terminals T1, T2 and T3. If you arrive at Terminal 5 of Chicago O’Hare Airport and want to take the metro to the city, you must first take the ‘automated people mover’ ATS to O’Hare station at Terminal 2. The metro ‘Blue Line’ connects the airport to the city centre, 24 hours a day every 5 to 10 minutes. The Chicago metro is better known as the “L”, short for “elevated” because large parts of the system run on elevated tracks. Downtown Chicago subway stations (The Loop) are named Clark/Lake, Washington, Monroe, Jackson and LaSalle, travel time from Chicago O’Hare Airport is 40 to 45 minutes. It takes 50 minutes to get to Clinton metro station near the iconic central station Union Station (change trains to Milwaukee).

The price for a one-way ticket is $ 5.00, children from 7 up to 11 years pay $ 1.25, children up to 6 years travel for free on public transportation in Chicago. Tickets are available from the ticket machines at the stations, a Ventra Ticket for a single journey including two changes can be used on the metro and bus for 120 minutes. If you want to use public transport more often, you can buy a Ventra Card, which is cheaper and easier. A Ventra Card worth $ 5.00 can be topped up and shared with six other people. A one-way ticket including transfers costs $ 2.50 with a Ventra Card, excluding the “L” to and from Chicago O’Hare Airport. Chicago’s public transportation consisting of subways and buses is operated by CTA Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago “L” has 8 metro lines.
