What is the distance from Hamburg Airport to the centre of Hamburg?
The airport is not far from the centre of Hamburg (Jungfernstieg, Hamburger Innenstadt). It takes 25 minutes to reach the inner city, the distance is 11 kilometres / 6.8 miles.

S-Bahn to Hamburg
Transportation to and from the airport is perfectly arranged by HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund), every 10 minutes S-Bahn S1 runs to and from the airport. The S-Bahn leaves from the underground station directly in front of the terminals. A journey to the main railway station Hamburg Hauptbahnhof takes 25 minutes. The next station Jungfernstieg, however, has a more central location close to the Binnenalster and Rathaus (travel time: 28 minutes). If you are travelling in the direction of Hamburg Airport you should keep in mind that S-Bahn S1 is divided at metro station Ohlsdorf. Only the first trains drive to the airport, the other trains continue their journey to metro station Poppenbüttel. After 12 minutes from the airport you will reach Barmbek, here you can change from S-Bahn S1 to metro U3 and reach Eppendorf, Sternschanze, St. Pauli and Landungsbrücken. Between Rathaus and Landungsbrücken, the U3 runs in the open air on an elevated track, giving you a beautiful view of the Port of Hamburg.

An adult ticket costs € 3.50 (Einzelkarte, Bereich AB), children from 6 up to 14 years can buy a ticket for € 1.30 (Einzelkarte Kind). The price of a day ticket is € 6.90 (9-Uhr-Tageskarte, Bereich AB) or € 2.50 (9-Uhr-Tageskarte Kind), to be used on the day of purchase until the next day 06:00 hours. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines at the stations and online through the HVV website and app. A cheap day ticket for up to five people is the ‘9-Uhr-Gruppenkarte’, the price is only € 12.90. The first S-Bahn to the airport leaves at 03:51 hours from Altona, the last S-Bahn from Hamburg Airport departs at 00:13 hours. During the night you can use bus line 606 between Hamburg Airport and Rathausmarkt via Winterhuder Marktplatz. Please consult website and timetable S-Bahn S1 and website HVV for more information.

Train to Lübeck, Kiel and Schwerin
Hamburg Airport is also widely used by tourists and business travellers heading to Lübeck and Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein, and Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. To get there by public transport you have to take S-Bahn S1 to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the journey time is 25 minutes and the price € 3.50. From Hamburg’s main railway station, the average journey time by train is 45 minutes to Lübeck, 1 hour and 10 minutes to Kiel and 1 hour and 5 minutes to Schwerin, with no need to change trains. You can opt for the faster and more expensive intercity train or the slower and cheaper regional train. Anyway, it is smart to book tickets online through Deutsche Bahn. Other places in Schleswig-Holstein (including Flensburg) and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (including Wismar and Rostock) can also be reached by train. A Schleswig-Holstein Ticket valid in three German states is recommended if you are travelling with several people and want to travel as cheaply as possible: € 44.00 for five people! Kiel is also directly accessible, a few times per day the Airport-Bus KIELIUS runs between the airport and Kiel, a ticket costs € 22.00 per person.
