What is the distance from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to the centre of Istanbul?
Istanbul has three airports, of which Istanbul Atatürk Airport is closest to the centre. The distance between the airport and the old city (Sultanahmet) is 19 kilometres / 11.8 miles, which by car requires about 30 minutes of travel time.
From ISL Airport to Istanbul City centre by Car
Metro and tram to Istanbul (Sultanahmet)
The old city of Istanbul (Sultanahmet) can be reached by metro M1A (red, every 6 minutes) in combination with tram T1 (blue, every 5 to 10 minutes). After arriving at Istanbul Atatürk Airport follow the signs Metro / Light Rail to get to metro station ‘Atatürk Havalimanı’. From there the metro leaves in the direction of Yenikapı, at the 6th stop Zeytinburnu you can transfer to the tram. Trams in the direction of Kabatas will take you to Sultanahmet, which is the 15th stop. A journey by public transport from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Sultan Ahmed Mosque / Blue Mosque) takes around 45 minutes.
You need one ticket for both metro and tram. These tickets (Jeton tokens) are avalable from the Jetonmatik machines. It is only possible to buy a ticket with cash (coins and small banknotes of 5, 10 and 20 TL). A ticket costs 4 TL each, to be used to get through the turnstiles at the metro station and the tram stop.
You can save on public transport in Istanbul if you are in possession of an Istanbulkart, this card costs 6 TL and can be charged with money. If you have an Istanbulkart, the price from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to Sultanahmet, Eminönü, Karaköy or Kabatas is only 3.95 TL. Havabüs to Istanbul (Taksim)
You can also use the Havabüs shuttle bus service, travel time to Taksim is about 40 minutes. This neighbourhood is known among tourists for its large number of hotels, shops, restaurants and bars. The stop in Taksim is located 500 metres from Taksim Square, close to the Point Hotel.
