London Heathrow Airport

General information

London Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and Europe, mainly used by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. The airport has four terminals (T2, T3, T4, T5) and two runways. Central London is accessible by train, metro, bus and taxi. The Elizabeth Line opened in May 2022, connecting all terminals of London Heathrow Airport with Paddington, West End, City (Farringdon and Liverpool Street) and Canary Wharf. Heathrow Express is the fastest option from Terminals 2 & 3 and Terminal 5 to the city centre (Paddington Station). There are many good hotels at the airport and nearby.

Where is London Heathrow Airport situated?

Heathrow Airport is situated in the west of London. All terminals are easily accessible by public transport and car, from the M4 and M25 motorways.

How many terminals does London Heathrow Airport have?

The busiest airport in Europe has four terminals. Terminals T2 and T3 are located in the middle of the airport complex, Terminal 4 is on the south side and Terminal 5 on the west side. Terminal 2 (The Queen’s Terminal) opened in June 2014 and is one of the most environmentally friendly terminals worldwide. Between terminals T2 and T3 you can find a bus station (Central Bus Station), metro station (London Underground) and railway station (Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line). Flights of national flag carrier British Airways depart from T5 and T3. If you want to know from which terminal your flight departs, it is advisable to check the Terminal Finder.

T2 is a modern terminal in the middle of the airport within walking distance of T3 (10 minutes). Terminal 2 consists of a main terminal T2A and a satellite pier/concourse (T2B). If your flight departs from T2B, keep in mind that you will have to walk about 15 minutes from T2A to T2B. Unlike Terminal 5, there is no APM automated people mover. Departures / Check-in A B C D is located on floor 5, Arrivals on floor 2, transport options taxi, bus, metro and train can be reached via floor 0.

T3 is a terminal in the middle of the airport within walking distance of T2 (10 minutes). Terminal 3 is divided into a part for Departures and a part for Arrivals. T3 Departures has two floors, the check-in desks can be found on the ground floor, the security checks on the top floor. Terminal 3 has an Upper Class Wing on the south side of the terminal, accessible by car and taxi (drop off only). This facility can be used by Virgin Upper Class and Delta One passengers.

T4 is a terminal in the south of the airport complex. Terminal 4 is mainly used for flights to Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, as well as flights to Europe. From Terminal 4 you cannot travel directly to the city centre on the Heathrow Express train service, but Elizabeth Line and the metro are available.

T5 is a modern terminal in the west of the airport complex. Terminal 5 consists of a main terminal T5A and two satellite piers/concourses (T5B and T5C), an APM automated people mover connects the main building with Concourse B and Concourse C. Terminal 5 is large, the Arrivals hall can be found on floor 0, the Departures hall on floor 3. In the Departures hall you will find Check-in zones A to J, Security North and Security South. For the T5 train station and metro station, you have to go down two floors from the Arrivals hall.

Travel Between Terminals

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 are a 10-minute walk from each other. From Terminals 2 & 3 it is 20 minutes (walking + train/metro) to Terminal 4 or Terminal 5. You will need more time to travel between Terminal 4 and Terminal 5, namely 30 minutes (walking + train). For traveling between the terminals, the train is your best choice, you can choose between Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line. Carelessly I left a box behind on Belt 3 after collecting 2 bags and left the restricted area. I’d noticed the missing only after I’d loaded all my bags in the Uber taxi on level 5 drop off point. A special compliment to Security Officer Ms Sharifah Weir who noticed I was in distress in the lift. She very quickly radio called her colleague for assistance. Unfortunately her colleague was busy and unable to help immediately. She then called Singapore Airlines staff for assistance and helped me retrieve my box very quickly. Ms Sharifah Weir was very professional, very reassuring and comforting. She was able to resolve my problem in a most efficient way. She’s model employer and definitely an asset to the Heathrow Airport. Thank you Ms Sharifah!

Because the airport has seperate terminals, it doesn't feel like the airport is that large but if you need to transfer from one terminal to another, it could take a while. Airport buildings that I visited are modern and easy to navigate in.
