Transportation to and from Los Angeles Airport
What is the distance from Los Angeles Airport to the centre of Los Angeles, Hollywoord, Venice and Santa Monica?
Los Angeles is a large and busy city. During peak hours, travel times can be many times longer than usual. The distance from the airport to Downtown Los Angeles is 18 miles / 29 kilometres. You should take into account a travel time of at least 25 minutes. To Hollywood it takes also about half an hour, the distance is 18 miles / 29 kilometres. Santa Monica and Venice Beach can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes by car.
From LAX Airport to Los Angeles City centre by Car
Bus and metro to Los Angeles
There are many ways to get to the city by public transport, however, a transfer is necessary. The first step is the bus from the airport to LAX City Bus Transit Center bus station (Lot C Shuttle) or Aviation / LAX Station metro station (Bus G Route). Both buses leave regularly, Lot C Shuttle from Upper/Departures Level and Bus G Route from Lower/Arrivals Level. The stops can be recognized by the orange with black sign ‘LAX Shuttle to Lot C’ and the blue sign indicating ‘LAX Shuttle Airline Connection’. At LAX City Bus Transit Center you can take several buses in the direction of Los Angeles, but you always have to change to another bus to actually get into the center. The total journey time for this trip is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
For one journey you will pay twice $ 1.75, so in total it’s $ 3.50. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver and paid in cash. You can also use a TAP card. At Aviation / LAX Station you can travel further with Green Line Metro to 7th Street / Metro Center Station in the center of Los Angeles, but you still have to change to Blue Line Metro in Willowbrook. INSIDER’S TIP: A fast bus connection exists between the bus stop Imperial / Aviation and 7th Street / Metro Center Station, known as Commuter Express 438.
The Metro Rail network in Los Angeles consists of six metro lines: Blue Line, Expo Line, Gold Line, Green Line, Purple Line, Red Line. At the end of 2019, the Crenshaw/LAX Line will be opened and two new metro stations close to Los Angeles Airport will be taken into use, namely Aviation/96th Street and Aviation/Century. These stations also get connected to the new northern connection of Green Line. In 2021 Aviation/96th Street station will be connected to the terminals of the airport by the LAX people mover.
Bus to Venice and Santa Monica
If you want to visit Venice or Santa Monica, you can take Big Blue Bus Route 3 in the direction of Downtown Santa Monica (SM) Station. The bus leaves 2 to 3 times per hour from LAX City Bus Transit Center (Lot C Shuttle). The first bus leaves around 05:00 hours in the morning and the last around midnight. The journey costs $ 1.25, tickets are available from the bus driver. You can also pay with a BBB token, with a TAP card or with the Token Transit App. Travel time to Downtown SM Station is approximately 30 minutes from LAX City Bus Transit Center.
The journey time to Lincoln NB & Venice NS is approximately 20 minutes. From here it is a 25-minute walk to Venice Beach. You can also take the bus, LA Metro bus line 33 or LA Metro bus line 733, in the direction of Venice. With both, you can get off at bus stop Main/Grand for Venice Beach. FlyAway to Los Angeles and Hollywood
It is faster and easier to choose FlyAway if you want to go to Downtown Los Angeles. From the airport, a direct shuttle bus runs to Union Station (Patsaouras Transit Plaza). Union Station is the largest train station in Los Angeles close to the centre of the city, Little Tokyo and Chinatown. The FlyAway shuttle bus will take you here for $ 9.75 in about 45 minutes. The bus runs every 30 minutes between 05:00 and 01:00 hours and every 60 minutes between 01:00 and 05:00 hours. You can pay for bus tickets with your debit or credit card on the bus.
FlyAway shuttle buses depart outside each terminal (Lower / Arrivals Level) to Los Angeles, the bus stops are indicated by the green sign ‘FlyAway Buses and Long Distance Vans’. FlyAway brings travellers straight to and from Hollywood every hour, the price is $ 8.00 for a single journey. The first bus from Hollywood FlyAway Bus Stop leaves at 05:15 hours, the last bus from Los Angeles Airport at 22:15 hours. Four other destinations are also accessible with FlyAway, namely Long Beach, Metro Orange Line Bus Stop (San Fernando Valley), Van Nuys and Westwood (University of California Los Angeles).
