What is the distance from Munich Airport to the centre of Munich?
By car, it takes just over half an hour to get from Munich Airport to the city centre. The distance between the airport and Munich’s central square Marienplatz is 38 kilometres / 23.6 miles. Three other cities near the airport are Augsburg (85 km), Ingolstadt (70 km, headquarters Audi) and Regensburg (110 km).
From MUC Airport to Munich City centre by Car
S-Bahn to Munich
The S-Bahn is the most common means of transport between Munich Airport and the city centre. You can choose for S-Bahn S1 which runs through the west of Munich or S-Bahn S8 running through the east of Munich. S-Bahn S1 takes 46 minutes to get to München Hauptbahnhof, travel time by S-Bahn S8 to the main railway station is 41 minutes. The centre of the city (Marienplatz) can be reached rather quickly by S-Bahn S8 (38 minutes), whereas S-Bahn S1 needs more time to get there (49 minutes). S1 and S8 run with 20 minutes intervals during both day and evening to and from the airport. Thus you have a travel option every 10 minutes. München Ostbahnhof is the terminus of S-Bahn S1, but do not let this confuse you. München Ostbahnhof can be reached more quickly with S-Bahn S8 (31 minutes)
An adult ticket is much more expensive (€ 11.60, 4 zones) than a ticket for children (€ 1.40). You can also buy an Airport-City-Day-Ticket online or from the ticket machines for € 13.00 per person if you want to use public transport more often on the day you arrive. Children from 6 up to 14 years pay only € 3.20 for such a ticket. An Airport-City-Day-Ticket is valid on the entire MVV network (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund) on the day of purchase until 06.00 hours the following morning. It is also possible to buy a ticket for a group of five adults, for which the price is only € 24.30. Two children from 6 up to 14 years of age are considered as one adult. The Messe München Exhibition Grounds are also accessible by public transport from Munich Airport, but you have to change once or twice. Next to this, a journey takes over one hour. Fortunately, there is an alternative, during some trade fairs in Munich shuttle buses run between Munich Airport and Messe München. These periods the bus service Airport-Tradefair-Express leaves every 30 minutes from Terminal 2 and runs via Terminal 1 Area A and Terminal 1 MAC to the international exhibition and congress center. Lufthansa Bus Express to Munich – BUY TICKETS
You can also choose to travel by bus to Munich, Lufthansa Bus Express offers a frequent service in cooperation with Autobus Oberbayern. Buses run from the airport via München Nord / Schwabing (30 minutes) to München Zentrum (45 minutes) every 15 minutes. The bus stop in the north of Munich is at the Nordfriedhof tube station (U6 metro), just 5 to 6 kilometres from Olympiapark München, BMW Welt and Allianz Arena.
