New York has three major airports that serve the city, LaGuardia Airport is the closest to the centre of the city. Travel time to Times Square (Midtown Manhattan) in New York is 25 minutes, the distance is 15 kilometres / 9.3 miles. During rush hour, it can take much longer to get to your destination. Times Square is not always seen as the centre of New York City, historians use Columbus Circle as the city centre and geographically, Queens is the centre of the city.

Bus and Subway to New York

From Terminal B, Terminal C and Terminal D, you can take the Q70 LaGuardia Link SBS bus service to Roosevelt Avenue – Jackson Heights metro station (74th Street / Broadway) and Woodside Station (61th Street / Woodside). The bus departs from Terminal B and runs to Woodside via Terminal D, Terminal C and Jackson Heights. Depending on where you get on the bus, the journey time to Roosevelt Avenue – Jackson Heights Subway Station is 10 to 20 minutes. At this station, you have the option to transfer to metro lines 7, E, F, M and R. All these lines of the New York Subway can take you to Manhattan in New York. Bus service Q70 runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During the day, buses run every 10 to 15 minutes, at night every 20 minutes. From Terminal A (jetBlue), you can take bus services Q47 to 74 St/Roosevelt Ave (Roosevelt Avenue – Jackson Heights Subway Station), Q48 to 111 St/Roosevelt Av and M60 SBS to Uptown Manhattan.

If you want to travel from New York LaGuardia Airport to Lower Manhattan or Midtown Manhattan, change at Roosevelt Avenue – Jackson Heights to the Subway. If Upper Manhattan is your final destination, it is better to opt for the M60 SBS bus service. Tickets for the bus cost $ 2.75 per person for a single journey. You can buy a Single Ride ticket or a MetroCard that you can top up with money. A MetroCard costs $ 1.00 and is the best choice if you plan to use public transportation more frequently during your stay in New York. You can choose between Pay-Per-Ride, a week pass or a monthly pass. The price for travelling a week on public transportation in NYC with the exception of express buses is $ 33.00 (7-Day Unlimited). If you choose Pay-Per-Ride, you can change from bus to Subway for free. Ticket machines can be found at the bus stops in front of the terminals. New York City public transport tickets – good to know!
Public transportation in New York consists of buses, metros (Subway) and trains / commuter rail (Long Island Rail Road LIRR, Metro-North Railroad MNR and Staten Island Railway SIR) operated by MTA Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Besides you can travel by ferries, including the free Staten Island Ferry between Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and Staten Island. Tourists mainly use the bus, Subway and of course taxis. New Yorkers commonly use train as a synonym for Subway. If you want to travel by bus and/or Subway, you must purchase a Single Ride ticket for $ 2.75 (bus) / $ 3.00 (Subway) or a MetroCard you can top up with Pay-Per-Ride, 7-Day Unlimited, 7-Day Unlimited Express Bus Plus or 30-Day Unlimited.

If you choose Pay-Per-Ride you pay $ 2.75 for a one-way ticket including transfers, MTA charges a $ 1.00 card fee for each new MetroCard. You may change from bus to metro, metro to bus or bus to bus once, there are no restrictions for transferring on the Subway. The price for a single ticket is always the same, express buses ($ 6.75) are the exception, on the bus and Subway in New York you do not have to worry about price zones. A MetroCard with Pay-Per-Ride can be used by up to four people. If you plan more than 12 bus and/or Subway rides during your stay in New York, it’s more economical to buy a 7-Day Unlimited for $ 33.00.

The MetroCard can be bought at many places in New York City, the easiest is to buy one from the ticket machines at the stations. You can pay with cash, debit card and credit card. On the buses in New York you can also buy single tickets from the bus driver, but only exact change in coins. At the metro stations, you need to swipe your Single Ride ticket or MetroCard to access the Subway, which consists of local trains and express trains. Children up to 44 inches / 112 centimetres in height can use public transportation in New York for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
