Bangkok can be reached quickly and easily with the Airport Rail Link, the elevated train departs every day of the year between Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phaya Thai Station in Bangkok. Trains run from 05:30 hours to 00:00 hours in both directions, every 10 to 15 minutes from Monday to Friday, every 12 to 15 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Phaya Thai Station is located in Central Bangkok, in the Ratchathewi district. The Airport Rail Link also stops at Lat Krabang, Ban Thap Chang, Hua Mak, Ramkhamhaeng, Makkasan and Ratchaprarop, six stops in total. The price per person depends on your destination and varies from 15 THB (= € 0.40, Lat Krabang) to 45 THB (= € 1.20, Phaya Thai). Most tourists choose to go to Makkasan Station for the MRT Blue Line and bus or Phaya Thai Station for the BTS Skytrain and bus. Travel time with Airport Rail Link from the airport to Phaya Thai Station is 26 minutes.
BTS Skytrain trains run every 3 to 7 minutes, a train ride from Phaya Thai Station to the busiest and best-known station Siam takes 4 minutes. You can purchase a token (ticket) for 23 Baht. The Skytrain network is entirely above ground and consists of two lines: BTS Sukhumvit Line and BTS Silom Line. Transfer from one line to another is only possible at Siam Station. The journey time from Phaya Thai Station to Asok in Sukhumvit is 10 minutes and the price 37 Baht, travel time from Phaya Thai Station to Sala Daeng in Silom is 14 minutes (change at Siam) and the price 30 Baht. At both stations, you can transfer to Bangkok’s MRT Metro, the Blue Line. There is another metro line in Bangkok, it is the Purple Line between Tao Poon and Khlong Bang Phai. If you plan to use public transport more often during your stay, you can opt for the Rabbit Card (BTS) or Metro Card (MRT), both of which can be charged with money.
Suvarnabhumi Airport Bus S1 to Bangkok (Khao San Road)
Since June 2017 it is again possible to travel between Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and Khao San Road. This street in the north of the old city is Bangkok’s most famous street and especially popular among backpackers. The bus service is called Suvarnabhumi Airport Bus S1 and departs from Level 1 at Gate 7. Buses run to and from the airport approximately every 60 minutes, between 06:00 hours and 22:00 hours. The bus stops and leaves on both sides of the 410 meters long Khao San Road. The price for a ticket is 60 THB per person, tickets are available from the bus driver and ticket desk at the airport. How to get from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport?
It is the easiest and most comfortable to take a taxi from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport, the second airport in Thailand is known as Bangkok’s low-cost airport. For a taxi ride, you will pay 500 Baht, travel time is about one hour. However, most backpackers choose for the free shuttle bus between both airports, operated by AOT (Airports of Thailand). The journey time varies, 50 minutes when traffic is light and 100 minutes when traffic is heavy. Every 20 minutes on average there is a bus leaving from both airports, between 05:00 hours and 00:00 hours. The shuttle bus stop can be found on Level 2 (Arrivals) at Gate 3. Only if you are in possession of a flight ticket (departing flight) you may use this free shuttle service.
