General information

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is a large and new airport in the state of Brandenburg, close to the German capital. Hence the name Berlin Brandenburg Airport, sometimes with the addition of Willy Brandt, a former politician who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. The construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport began in 2006, the airport was due to open in 2011. However, Berlin Brandenburg Airport encountered a series of delays, due to various circumstances. The airport opened on October 31, 2020, nine years later than planned.

The airport consists of two terminals (T1 and T2) and two runways. The northernmost of the two was used as the sole runway of Berlin Schönefeld Airport. One week after the airport’s opening, Berlin Tegel Airport closed its doors (November 8, 2020). The capacity of Berlin’s new airport is 40 million passengers per year, slightly more than the number of passengers at Berlin Tegel (24.2 million passengers in 2019) and Berlin Schönefeld (11.4 million passengers in 2019) together. In the future, capacity can be expanded by the construction of Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and a satellite terminal. Terminal 5 (former Berlin Schönefeld Airport) is closed forever. At the airport there are two airport lounges after the security check, namely BER Lounge Tempelhof and BER Lounge Tegel.

Where is Berlin Brandenburg Airport situated?

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is located in the state of Brandenburg southeast of Berlin. The airport can be reached by car via the A113 motorway and the Schönefelder Allee.

How many terminals does Berlin Brandenburg Airport have?

The airport consists of two terminals, namely Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminals T1 and T2 are modern and located between the two runways. T1 is the largest terminal consisting of a central hall, Haupt-Pier (16 jet bridges), Süd-Pier (9 jet bridges) and Nord-Pier. There are 10 check-in zones (0 to 9) and 4 security checkpoints (1, 2, 4 and 5) in the Departures hall of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. In the Arrivals hall you will find Arrival/Ankunft 1 on the right and Arrival/Ankunft 2 on the left (just like Hamburg Airport).

Terminal 2 is smaller and connected to Nord-Pier by two walking bridges. If you depart from Terminal 2, you must always check in online. If you have large luggage, you will need to use the ‘self-service baggage drop-off points’. It is a 5-minute walk between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the distance is 400 metres. The main carriers at the airport are low cost airlines easyJet (T1), Eurowings (T1) and Ryanair (T2). If it’s busy at the security checks in Terminal 1, you have the option to use the security check in Terminal 2 too. After passing through security, terminals T1 and T2 are interconnected, allowing access to all boarding gates

Terminal 1 floors (Ebenen / Levels)
E2 second floor: offices and observation deck
E1 first floor: Departures, check-in desks and security checks
E0 ground floor: Arrivals, taxi ranks and local/regional bus station
U1 -1: DB Deutsche Bahn Reisezentrum and long-distance bus station
U2 -2: underground train station Berlin Brandenburg Airport (six tracks, platform 5 and platform 6 reserved for S-Bahn)
