General information

Cancún Airport is a major international airport in the east of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. It is Mexico’s second largest airport based on passenger numbers, after Mexico City Airport. Cancún Airport has four terminals (T1 closed, T2, T3, T4) and two runways. The airport is widely used by holidaymakers from Mexico, United States, Canada and Europe, popular holiday destinations near the airport are Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum (Pueblo and Beach). The Yucatan Peninsula has more to offer than beautiful beaches, namely impressive Mayan temples and beautiful cenotes.

The ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a 2 hour 30 minute drive from Cancún Airport.

Where is Cancún Airport  situated?

Cancún Airport is located south of Cancún and north of Playa del Carmen, by car you can reach the airport via Carretera Cancún-Tulum (MEX 307). The Mexican part of the Yucatan peninsula is divided into the states of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, the airport is located in Quintana Roo.

How many terminals does Cancún Airport have?

The airport has four terminals, from west to east: Terminal 4 (opened in October 2017), Terminal 1 (closed), Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Terminals T2, T3 and T4 at Cancún Airport are approximately the same size and divided in Arrivals and Departures. Unlike most other airports, it is not possible to move between Arrivals and Departures, because of security reasons. If you are flying to a destination in the Caribbean, Central or South America, you will need to go to Terminal 2. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines use Terminal 3, most European airlines arrive at and depart from Terminal 4.

Free shuttle buses run between the terminals, every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the time of the day. Shuttle Terminal Línea A connects terminals T2, T3, and T4, the bus stops are located in front of the terminal. The buses run from Terminal 2 via Terminal 3 (6 minutes) to Terminal 4 (7 minutes) and back to Terminal 2 (7 minutes). You can also walk, the walking distance between Terminal 4 and Terminal 2 is 13 minutes, between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 it’s 8 minutes. Taxis are another option, but very expensive.
