Colombo Airport is a major international airport in the west of Sri Lanka, named after former prime minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike. Due to the growing popularity of Sri Lanka as a holiday destination, the number of passengers at Colombo Airport increases year after year (except for 2020 and 2021, due to corona). A new modern terminal is currently being built and will most likely be commissioned in 2025, around which time the new railway station of Colombo Airport will be opened too.
Where is Colombo Airport situated?
Colombo Airport is situated close to Negombo and north of the largest city (Colombo) and capital city (Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte) of Sri Lanka. The airport can be reached from Colombo via the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway E03 toll road.
How many terminals does Colombo Airport have?
The most important and busiest airport in the country has one terminal, consisting of BIA Departures and BIA Arrivals. Cinnamon Air’s domestic flights are the exception, these depart from Domestic Terminal (T3). Colombo Airport is currently being expanded and will have a new modern terminal (T2, Pier 2 and Pier 3) southwest of the current outdated terminal (T1, Pier 1). After the opening of the new terminal in 2025, the airport’s capacity will grow from 6 to 15 million passengers per year.
