Albania was a communist state until 1991. Nowadays, the country is a parliamentary democracy. Since the early 1990s, much has changed positively. Nevertheless, Albania is still one of the poorer countries in Europe. The largest cities in the country are the capital Tirana and the port city of Durrës, both cities are situated in the middle of the country. You can reach Durrës by plane via Tirana Airport or by boat via Bari in Italy. Albania is not a popular tourist attraction, but this will change. The cities of Tirana and Berat are more than worth a visit, the same goes for Vlorë, Sarandë and the beautiful beaches (our favorite: Gjipe Beach) in the south of the country. The international airport of the country is modern and mainly used by Albawings from Albania and Ernest Airlines and Blue Panorama Airlines from Italy.
