Sudan is a large country in the northeast of Africa. Until 2011, the country was even bigger than it is today. That year independence was declared in the south, Sudan and South Sudan are nowadays two international recognised countries. In terms of population, Sudan is the tenth country in Africa with 42 million inhabitants, the largest cities are the capital Khartoum and Omdurman. The country has only two international airports, namely Khartoum Airport and Port Sudan Airport near the Red Sea. Sudan’s most famous landmark are the temples of Meroë along the banks of the Nile River.
