General information

Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany and one of the busiest airports in Europe. The airport serves as Lufthansa’s primary hub alongside Munich Airport, and is also widely used by the German airlines Condor, Discover Airlines and TUI fly Deutschland. Frankfurt Airport has two terminals (T1 and T3) and four runways, it is operated by the airport operator Fraport. Terminal 3 is a very modern terminal, which opened in April 2026. Terminal 1 is older, but also larger, primarily used by Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners.

Where is Frankfurt Airport situated?

The airport is situated southwest of Frankfurt, next to the A3 motorway. Other cities close to the airport are Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Mainz.

How many terminals does Frankfurt Airport have?

The airport consists of two terminals, Terminal 1 (Gates A, B, C, Z) in the north and Terminal 3 (Gates G, H, J) in the south. The distance between the two terminals is 5.6 kilometres / 3.5 miles. Travellers can use the Sky Line People Mover between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 free of charge, a ride takes 8 minutes. Terminal 1 has four floors: Level 0 Airport City Mall, Level 1 Arrivals, Level 2 Departures (T1A, T1B, T1C) and Level 3 Departures (T1Z). Terminal 3 opened its doors in 2026 and consists of a main building and three piers (Flugsteig G, Flugsteig H, Flugsteig J), it has an annual capacity of 19 million passengers. The total capacity of both terminals combined is 65 million passengers per year. Terminal 2 (Gates D, E) is closed for renovation work until 2036.

TIP: If you want to use public transport more often and benefit from discounts on museums, city tours, restaurants, shops and more, then the Frankfurt Card for 1 day (€ 13.00) or 2 days (€ 21.00) is recommended. You can also use the card for the journey to and from Frankfurt Airport.
