The fourth busiest airport in the country lies in the northwest of Ireland. The airport is located in a rural area without any city nearby as the nearest city is Galway (90 kilometres). The village of Knock, 20 kilometres from the airport, has no more than 1,000 inhabitants. Every departing passenger aged 12 years and over must pay a surcharge (Development Fee) of € 10.00 at the airport, the proceeds are used for infrastructure developments.
