The airport in the Andes Mountains is one of the highest international airports in the world at an altitude of 4061.5 metres. The airport provides access to two of the country’s largest cities: El Alto and La Paz. In Bolivia, only Santa Cruz de la Sierra has more inhabitants (1.5 million). La Paz El Alto Airport is mainly used by carriers Boliviana de Aviación and Ecojet. In 2006, SABSA the Bolivian state airport authority, opened a new modern terminal for international and domestic flights.

La Paz El Alto Airport is located in the city of El Alto (4,150 metres), west of La Paz (3,640 metres). Autopista La Paz-El Alto Ruta 3 connects the cities of El Alto and La Paz. The government of Bolivia is based in La Paz, the official capital of the country is Sucre.

The airport consists of a two-storey terminal. The Arrivals hall (Puerta 1 International Arrivals, Puerta 2 Domestic Arrivals) is on the left and the check-in desks on the right, in the middle you will find shops, restaurants, exchange offices and ATMs. The security check (preboarding rooms) and boarding gates on the first floor can be reached via escalators to the left of the check-in desks.
