The distance from the airport to the centre of Melbourne (Federation Square) is 25 kilometres / 15.5 miles. Travel time by car is around 30 minutes. It’s the fastest to travel via the Tullamarine Freeway, but you’ll have to pay a toll (CityLink). Taking the Western Ring Road is your alternative, it’s free and takes longer.

Bus and tram or train to Melbourne
Buses 478, 479, 482 and 901 (SmartBus) depart from the ground level of the transport hub next to Terminal 4. Buses 478, 479 and 482 run to Westfield Airport West Shopping Centre, while bus 901 runs to Broadmeadows railway station. From Westfield Airport West Shopping Centre you can take tram line 59 in the direction of the city centre. From Broadmeadows railway station, you can take the train to Southern Cross in the west of the city centre and Flinders Street in the south of the city centre. For both routes, the expected travel time is about 70 minutes and the price is 5.00 AUD per person (2 hours in zone 1+2).
It is also possible to buy a day pass for 10.00 AUD on weekdays or 7.20 AUD during the weekend. You will need a Myki Card for public transport in Melbourne, which costs 6.00 AUD or you can use a free mobile Myki Card that you will need to charge with at least 10.00 AUD. Myki Cards can be purchased at the airport from ticket machines in terminals T2, T3 and T4. Good to know, in the city centre you can travel by tram free of charge (Free Tram Zone). SkyBus Melbourne City Express to Melbourne
A fast and comfortable bus service from and to Melbourne Airport is provided by SkyBus. Buses run 24 hours a day (from 04:00 hours to 01:00 hours), 365 days a year to Skybus Coach Terminal in Central Business District. The bus station is located close to the main railway station Southern Cross and Docklands Stadium. The city express buses depart every 10 minutes from terminals T1, T3 and T4.
