North Macedonia is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula and has over 2 million inhabitants. The country was part of the former Yugoslavia until September 1991. After its independence it was known as Macedonia, to the dissatisfaction of people from Greece. It’s because the historical region of Macedonia is for the most part located in Greece. Since 12 February 2019, the country is officially called North Macedonia, a compromise between the governments of North Macedonia and Greece. The capital of the country is Skopje, a quarter of the population lives here. Most visited tourist sights in North Macedonia are Skopje, the Matka Canyon, Lake Ohrid near Ohrid and National Park Pelister near Bitola. North Macedonia has two international airports, namely Skopje Airport and Ohrid Airport.
