General information

Osaka Kansai Airport is located in the middle of the country and is the busiest airport in Japan after Tokyo Haneda Airport and Tokyo Narita Airport. When Osaka Kansai Airport opened in 1994, it was the first airport worldwide to be built on reclaimed land in the sea. Later, Hong Kong Airport (1998) and Seoul Incheon Airport (2001) followed. Osaka Kansai Airport is also known as the airport with the longest terminal in the world (Terminal 1: 1.7 kilometres), and it says it hasn’t lost a single piece of baggage since opening. Osaka has two airports, namely Osaka Kansai Airport and Osaka Itami Airport. Osaka is the centre for trade and industry in Japan. Other large cities near Osaka are Kobe and Kyoto, both with approximately 1.5 million inhabitants.

Where is Osaka Kansai Airport situated?

The airport is situated on two artificial islands in Osaka Bay southwest of the city. The airport is accessible by road and rail via the Airport Access Bridge (“Sky Gate Bridge R”). Osaka Kansai Airport was constructed to relieve overcrowding at Osaka Itami Airport. It was built in the sea because of the problems that arose during the construction of Tokyo Narita Airport. This airport was built on expropriated land in a rural area which caused great unrest among the population. 

How many terminals does Osaka Kansai Airport have?

Osaka Kansai Airport has two runways and two terminals (T1 and T2). Terminal 1 is the longest terminal in the world with a length of 1.7 kilometres. Almost all airlines use Terminal 1, only Peach (Japanese), Jeju Air (South Korean) and Spring Airlines (Chinese) fly from Terminal 2. The terminals are connected by free shuttle buses. In Terminal 1 you can use an APM automated people mover (Wing Shuttle) to move faster. In front of Terminal 1 you will find the railway station of Osaka Kansai Airport and Aeroplaza / Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport.
