Quito Mariscal Sucre Airport opened in 2013 and has since replaced the old airport in the north of Quito. The old airport turned into a city park called Parque Bicentenario. The new airport has the same name as the old airport, namely Quito Mariscal Sucre Airport. Both are named after independence fighter Antonio José de Sucre, friend of the military and political leader Simón Bolívar. Incidentally, Quito is not only the capital of Ecuador, but also the highest capital in the world at 2,850 metres.
