General information
The airport lies as the name suggests in the Murcia region, one of the seventeen autonomous regions in Spain. The airport has one runway and a modern terminal, the official opening took place on January 15, 2019. The airport is also known as Corvera Airport.
The airport replaced Murcia-San Javier Airport, this airport is now used as a military base. The relocation from San Javier to Corvera took a lot of time, due to the financial crisis and politics. According to one part of the population, the opening of the new airport has been a waste of money and Murcia-San Javier Airport could have continued as the gateway to Murcia. Proponents, however, are happy that aircraft no longer land and take off near the beautiful beaches on the Costa Cálida.
