Dakar is the capital of Senegal and also the westernmost point of the African mainland. Dakar is home to the tallest statue in Africa: Monument de la Renaissance Africaine. Until 2008, Dakar was the end point (finish) of the world-famous Dakar Rally, also known as Paris-Dakar. In French colonial times, Saint-Louis in the northwest of Senegal was the country’s capital. Senegal as a tourist destination is growing in popularity because of its spectacular nature, beautiful beaches and bustling capital. Senegal’s most important airport is Dakar Blaise Diagne Airport, opened in December 2017.
