Bus to Zanzibar City
Public transport on the island of Zanzibar is carried out by so-called “dala dala” buses that come in different shapes and sizes, most of them are converted trucks or minibuses. It is possible to travel from the airport to Zanzibar City by public transport, buses run from Terminal 2 / Domestic Terminal to Darajani Market / Bazaar (Dala-Dala Terminus). From terminals T2 and T3 you can walk to Golden Tulip Zanzibar Airport Hotel & Spa and take the bus from there in the direction of Stone Town. Dala-Dala Terminus is located on the edge of the city centre and is one of two major bus stations in Zanzibar City along with Mwanakwerekwe Market in the east of the city. From here “dala dala” buses run to destinations on the east coast of Zanzibar, such as Nungwi, Matemwe, Kiwengwa, Paje and Jambiani.
On the front of a “dala dala” you can read where the bus is heading to. Travel time from Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume Airport to Darajani Market is approximately 30 minutes. Next to the driver, there is someone else on board the “dala dala” who sells tickets. Never buy your tickets ahead of time, only once you are inside. The price for a one-way ticket between the airport and the city is currently 500 TZS. A bus ticket from Zanzibar City to other destinations on the island costs 3,000 TZS, in some cases you have to pay extra for large luggage. If you are not that adventurous, it is better to travel to and from the airport by taxi.
