I've been traveling since I was 9, and this airport is by far the worst. The security staff are soooo rude and so incompetent.
Absolutely incompetent. The new EU EES (Entry Exit System) is now being put into service. It took an Hour and 10 minutes to get through arrivals passport control. Firstly they asked some people to use the biometric scanners that were in the waiting area. Whether this was used or not made absolutely no difference to waiting time. Everyone who used them was sent back into the queue. At the border guard kiosk, all was done again. Allegedly this was to confirm what had already been scanned regardless of whether you had used the biometric scanner! In addition the usual passport checking and stamping was done.
Whilst I might be able to excuse the length of time it took by agreeing to the double checking in order to confirm the system was working, it was difficult to justify when leaving Germany through Frankfurt was just as bad with the same lengthy queue.
My wife has an EU passport and was able to go through in just 5 minutes in either direction.
Surely having been scanned and checked on the way in, I should simply have to submit my biometric data again and go on my way to security check.
The UK end took just 5 minutes for me and my wife to get through passport control at Heathrow.
Given Germany's reputation for efficiency it is hard to credit them with anything other than being good at wasting time
Furthermore, the signs at Frankfurt airport are at best misleading or simply not shown, leaving travellers to search around the airport for a sign that might lead them to the desired destination.
I would have left 0 stars as a rating but that is not an option!
Last month, my wife and I took a trip to South Africa. It’s a dream destination with breathtaking landscapes and animals, which of course means safaris. In short, before we could enjoy these incredible pleasures, we had to get there. We booked our tickets months in advance through an online travel agency. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience and encountered the worst possible circumstances. Lufthansa was to fly us there, which in itself was epic. Not to mention the stopovers on both the outbound and return flights. We departed from CDG for Johannesburg via Frankfurt and its airport. What a nightmare! It was the worst possible experience. Right from the start, our flight was delayed for reasons unknown. The delay was initially 1 hour and 15 minutes, but was reduced to 25 minutes. You learn on the tarmac that arrivals are in the first terminals, A, B, etc., but international flights take off from the last terminals, X, Y, Z, and that’s when you realize the size of this airport. We barely made our outbound flight, and what we didn’t know yet was that our luggage wasn’t as lucky as we were. It arrived two days later, but we had already filed a complaint with the airline about this.
On the return trip, there were no delays, but we don’t know why the screening and orientation procedures were different. We had to wait in line again to have our luggage searched, despite the tight schedule. People who arrived after us were going through before us—it was a real circus. And then there was the racial profiling, let’s face it; I would have thought it was because I’m a man of color… Well, no, it was my wife, who is white. Apparently, a spicy sauce she bought at the duty-free shop in Johannesburg reacted to explosives. We thought it was a bad joke, but no, they wouldn’t budge. And it was a young girl, about 20/22 years old, who was in charge of this and who decided to go after my wife, threatening her that if she didn’t lower her voice, she would miss her flight and even worse, because a young cop who must have watched too many episodes of Derrick decided to get involved and play tough. My wife burst into tears, and I could see the glee in the eyes of this low-level cop who was a perfect match for this young woman. Anyway, I join my wife and tell her that there’s no point in getting upset, that we’ll be home soon, and I look at these two poor airport employees whose lives are so miserable and boring that their greatest thrill is to play with the little influence and power they have at that moment. I look at my wife and say to her, “Listen, you and I have been traveling the world for years and we’re not done yet. They’re stuck here searching through the luggage of people like you and me. Believe me, we’re where we belong, and they’ll end up here. I’ve never had any grievances against Germans in the past, but now I do. I’ve always refused to learn their language, even though I speak eight. I have vague memories of visiting the Brandenburg Gate when I was young. But now there’s no way I’m setting foot in that country or that airport again, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if I’m generalizing about one incident, when you do this job you have to be beyond reproach, and they are far from it.
I’m going to blacklist Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport—the whole country, in fact! I found myself dreaming of hurting the people who attacked my wife. They brought out the worst in me. That is the sad conclusion of our trip to South Africa. Apart from that, it was very pleasant and unforgettable.
Finally after 40 minutes we passed through security! Three families/groups ahead of us. After we finally got through I complained rather loudly. Once again security in Frankfurt is the worst. Talking among each other as much as working, so ridiculously slow! I told them they are the worst I have EVER seen. Everyone else in line felt the same I’m sure. The line we were sent to had SEVEN staff there.
The Lufthansa staff in Chicago was almost as bad, flirting with each other, completely careless attitude, even with the two hour delay. In fact, I never heard a single apology for the delay! They should have been saying sorry with every person at least once. Many people missed flights and had to stay over. Ok, that happens but when careless flirting staff don’t acknowledge it it is really infuriating.
Avoid Lufthansa and Frankfurt whenever possible. Much better options exist.

Sorry for the lenghty review....
I'm reviewing Frankfurt Airport as someone picked up a passenger:
1) my friends' flight was delayed from its departing City. Reason given FRA didn't have enough staff to handle the incoming flights!
2) when we got there, we drove to Arrivals parking -where 10 min parking is free of charge! 10 mins. for pick up at an airport what joke!!
3) While there we had intermittent to NO Cellphone reception - another joke?!
4) After my friend's plane had landed (inner Europe flight) it took her over an hour to get her luggage -this is around 10-11 p.m.
5) we only had intermittent to NO cellphone reception, I walked into the terminal several times to see if I could find her, and I agree with reviews on this and other review sites that the signage in FRA is no existent and/or misleading
6) for ca. 1hour and 15 minutes we ended up paying Euro 30.00 for Parking!!!! what a rip-off, especially since we had to wait that long, because they were short staffed!!
We had to park all the way at the end of arrivals because everything else was full. Of course, if takes passengers over an hour to exit the Terminal there will be parking spots blocked instead of flowing traffic. But I guess as long as they charge those kind of parking fees......
Customer oriented service non-existent at Frankfurt Airport.
JFK NYC on the other hand excellent!! They have two Cellphone parking lots on the Airport grounds. You park for free and have to stay with your vehicle. The person you're picking up calls you when they're outside the Terminal with the exact exit location and then you can drive there, pull up, pick up the passenger and leave so you're not blocking whatever few parking spaces there are for hours at a time!!
FYI: FRA and JFK handle about the same amount of passengers per year and have approx. the size of land area.
FYI: Most reviews on this and other review sites about Frankfurt Airport are 1star / negative.
Very horrible customer service. I had flown from and landed to this airport many times, but the experience keeps getting worse every single time. Condescending, rude staff who mistreat passengers.
Pessimo aeroporto.
Deuxième galère a Francfort.
Horrible experience. Flight cancelled due to labor dispute 07/28/22. Night in the hotel, next day I was told I’m rebooked for 07/31/22. . That was unacceptable to me , so , why searching for sooner flight I was swindled of $5600 cash by somebody that introduced herself as julienne and was sitting in the “tickets for all a airlines” , she sold me a fake ticket on a plane that didn’t take empty seats , took my money and … good luck to me … she also swiped my cc for a different ticket , that didn’t work for me , but the money was not refunded to my credit card … and all of that in the levity place , next to Lufthansa counters .. now I can’t find anybody to help me possibly get the money back , and my cc is investigating the fraudulent activity, she also swim the card two more times for various amounts, but cats was blocked due to suspicious of fraudulent intended… absolute horrible experience . Will not fly through that airport any more if possible
Attend Frankfurt airport to be treated like second class citizen if you arent German. If you are of colour/ different races, you will not be helped. The ground staff refuse to serve anyone who is not German. The passport control teams are rude and racist. Over selling seats and then only letting Germans on the plane.
This is GLOBAL hub. Airports see thousands of people daily from different countries and cultures. Learn to treat passengers with respect and educate your staff that systemic racism is not acceptable. What an embarrassment to the German name, culture and people.
I got stuck here due to my flight coming in late and walked around like a new traveler for over 2 hours trying to figure out where to go to pick up my luggage, where to get on the s Bahn, where to go for everything! It was such a frustrating experience due to no signs to help direct people who don't know how this airport works. I will never pass through this airport again if at all possible. Been traveling for 35+years and NEVER experienced anything like this airport. Terrible!
Siamo una coppia ultra ottantenni abbiamo chiesto una carrozzina
Ci hanno proprio abbandonati
I connected from USA through Frankfurt to France on Lufthansa. Planes were late. Customs and Security lines so long I missed connecting flights coming and going. Airport poorly signed. All stuff rude and condescending. No help or staff to be found anywhere. I had to check into a hotel overnight due to missed flight. I will NEVER fly LUFTHANSA or take a flight through Germany EVER again . I will also share my experience with ever one I know. Shame on you Germany.
Many who work at Frankfurt airport: they are not kind, racist, they only know the English language with their mother tongue! rude treatments.....
--------------------
Absolutely pathetic no but no currency exchange facilities open stuck here for 7 hours can buy anything to eat or drink.
